Award-Winning Photo of a Meeting of the last Survivors and Liberators of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp

For the eleventh time this year, the Austrian prize for press photography “Objektiv 2016” was awarded by APA – Austrian Press Agency to the best press photographs of the year.
“Objektiv” is altogether awarded in six categories. The category Timeline was won by Volker Weihbold from the newspaper “Oberösterreichische Nachrichten” for his photograph of a meeting of the last survivors and liberators of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. His winning photograph was shot on 8 October 2015 at the Mauthausen Memorial, during the emotional meeting of the last survivors and liberators of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp. The photograph shows Pál Ferenczi with a US army veteran.
Pál Ferenczi was born in 1920 in Hungary and was a trade union activist. In April 1944, he was deported to Mauthausen as political prisoner and remained there until the concentration camp was liberated. Pál Ferenczi also manufactured the chess set which can be seen in the permanent exhibition “The Mauthausen Concentration Camp 1938–1945” at the Mauthausen Memorial.
