Guided Tours on Monuments Day
25.09.2016
On Monuments Day on 25 September 2016, at 10:00 am to 1:00 pm a walking tour around the Mauthausen Memorial is organised.
The Mauthausen Concentration Camp was in many ways integrated in the social environment. Transported prisoners were driven from the railway station to the camp right through the town, SS men and their families partook in the town life, local business cooperated with the concentration camp, spectators came to watch football games at the concentration camp, residents of surrounding farms witnessed the crimes committed at the concentration camp, and during the so-called “Mühlviertel Hare Hunt” in February 1945 the population came in direct contact with prisoners at large. A walking tour around the Mauthausen Memorial draws attention to these aspects and provides unusual perspectives of the former concentration camp and its history.
