Mauthausen-Studien 16: Alexander Prenninger

‘Das letzte Lager. Evakuierungstransporte und Todesmärsche in der Endphase des KZ-Komplexes Mauthausen’ (‘The Last Camp. Evacuation transports and death marches in the final phase of the Mauthausen concentration camp complex’) by Alexander Prenninger was published as Volume 16 of the series ‘Mauthausen-Studien’.

This study carries out the first analysis to date of the evacuation transports and death marches at the Mauthausen concentrationcamp complex in the years 1943 to 1945.

Mauthausen was the last large camp complex to be liberated by the Allies. The majority of the prisoners liberated there only arrived at Mauthausen during the final phase of the Nazi camp system as a result of other camps being cleared and closed. At the heart of this study are the experiences of the deportees on their journeys to Mauthausen.

Alexander Prenninger is a researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Digital History. He was awarded the 2018 Herbert Steiner Prize for his PhD thesis, on which this book is based.

The book is available from the Mauthausen Memorial Book Shop and via the website of the new academic press. A sample is also available as a download from the publisher’s website.
